Year 12 Biology Gene Technology Access Centre excursion
Sep 14th, 2018On Friday 14th September the Year 12 Biology students visited the Gene Technology Access Centre in Parkville to conduct an DNA manipulation experiment. The students were able to use the state of the art technology to produce specific proteins required for industry and research. They spliced and recombined DNA from a bacterium with DNA from different organisms and then reintroduced this 'recombinant' DNA back into the bacterium. The students were able to transform E.coli with the plasmid which was demonstrated by the glow of the Green Florescent Protein. This program gave the students an understanding of how a research lab works and enhanced their level of learning into Genetically Modified and Transgenic Organisms.
